Dark Angel, Queen of Swords, Resurrection Blvd. and Titans: Latin mamis are taking over TV! The whole historia here! Checkalo!

By Carlos Camacho

To think that just last spring we were complaining about how there are no Latinos in television! Now, prime-time TV can't get enough of them, and that’s cause we talking Latinas!

Tessie Santiago, Marisol Nichols, Jessica Alba, Gina Torres and Lourdes Benedicto are taking prime-time TV by storm! The only thing missing is a reality show called Big Latina Hermana!

Si señor, like Jennifer Lopez on that fateful night in a NYC nightclub, pistol-packing Latin mamas dominate prime-time TV! Dark Angel, Queen of Swords, Resurrection Blvd. and Titans. All the hot shows star Latinas.

Si señor. With their feisty attitude and carefully-applied makeup, these curvaceous warrior-babes are hell-bent on saving the Earth from mutants, or whatever, but they always kick ass in steelo. And they always dress to stress the fact that they have "big skin."

And to think that when the Edward James Olmos’ Latino drama series American Family was cancelled we were the first to cry "racismo!" Damm, peeps don't wanna see no Edward James Olmos ('cept on Miami Vice reruns), peeps wanna see sexy Latin mamas with big guns! And networks, smart as always, are giving it to them in spades (and in spandex too, ay mama!)

And here we give you the lowdown on each of these boob-tube bellezas, checkalo:

Jessica Alba is the star of Dark Angel, this season's best rated live-action show. The spunky Mexican-American Californian from Never been kissed and Idle Hands kicks ass as a genetically-modified cat burglar that ain't no pussy: She's trying to save the Earth and stuff. The series is directed by James Cameron, the man who brought you Titanic and Terminator I-II directs.

Lourdes Benedicto: In Titans, Aaron Spelling's Dallas for the '00 generation, Brooklyn-born Lourdes Benedicto plays Samantha Sierras. The daughter of the maid, she has rose to become the executive assistant to Richard Williams. All of 26, the daughter of Filipino and Dominican parents, Lourdes (no relation to Madonna's baby) graduated from Carnegie-Mellon, think about that when you are checking out her belly-button piercings. Plus, she was in NYPD Blue and in Permanent Midnight with Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson.

Tessie Santiago: She's the lead in Queen of Swords, a new series that's like Zorro with breasts, kinda like Xena without the steroids and the lezz overtones. We are pretty sure Tessie is short for something; we are also pretty sure that Tessie don't have many shortcomings. This is Santiago's first professional acting job ever. Why was the 21-year old Cuban-American chosen over all the other seasoned pros? Well, check out the pictures and see.

Marisol Nichols: It may not be Who Wants to be a Millionaire? but Mexican boxers drama Resurrection Blvd. has earned the respect of the critics, good ratings, broke the color barrier for Latinos in prime-time TV (first eminently Latino show ever!) and, most importantly, gave us the chance to check out this belleza from Illinois, daughter of Eastern-European and Mexicano parents.

Gina Torres: A recent Knight-Ridder article said that Xena-type shows are the fastest growing trend in television. And here's where Gina Torres comes into play. After gaining experience in silicone-fantasy hits such as Xena and Hercules Gina, a Cuban-American from the Boogie Down Bronx, got to co-star in Cleopatra 2525, an actioner about a band of female warriors that battle evil computers half-naked, kinda like The Terminator meets Baywatch.
