Congrats to Dark Angel for winning the People's Choice Award for Best New Drama!! With this award and the fabulous ratings, it looks like a second season will actually happen. Sorry it's been so long folks. I promise to try harder to keep up. I appreciate those of you who let me know you actually read my reviews after my last review's subtle hint. I do have fun writing these so it's nice to know people are reading them. Well, onto the review. The first new episode of the 2001, penned by David Zabel, packed quite a bite. Can everyone here say obsessed? I thought so! We all have our little quirks, things that we are a little obsessive about. Boy do I have my share! Most of them revolve around my TV and computer. I've been yelled at more than once for blowing off friends in favor of a night in front of the tube or the computer. My main excuse is that I need to save money since I spend my life perpetually in debt, but I know my friends don't believe that, especially since I can always find money to buy computer accessories, new software, or good DVD's. I have friends who are obsessive about exercise and cleanliness, now those are useful obsessions, I wish could have one of those!! Obsession is a common literary and television theme. The most well known obsessive crusader was of course Captain Ahab, but this theme has been explored in modern television as well. One example that comes to my mind is the new series THE FUGITIVE on CBS. The cop on that series is so obsessed with finding Dr. Kimble, aka the fugitive, that he loses his job and almost loses his family. Logan won't lose his job because of his obsession, his job is his obsession, but in this episode he came very close to losing something, or should I say someone, just as important. Logan's obsession has it's good points, I mean he is trying to save the world or at least some of the helpless people in Seattle, but is it worth losing Max? In the end he didn't think so. In the end Logan realized that the people in his life, and in particular Max, should not be pushed aside because duty calls. Sure you have to fight the good fight, but you can't lose sight of those around you and what they need. One can only do so much after, and of course, 'the world will still be broken in the morning' so it's okay to take a night off every once in awhile. For Logan, the obsession has also been a distraction from the less the appealing part of his life. I certainly don't blame him for that. I love the way the writer's addressing the issue of Logan being in a wheelchair and Michael Weatherly is doing a great job with it too. Him being in a wheelchair adds a great dynamic to the show. I also love the continuing storyline of unrequited love between Max and Logan. They obviously care a great deal for each other, but are unable to admit or even address those feelings for various reasons. Their friends can see it even if they won't admit it. The secondary storyline in this episode was bizarre to say the least. Normal was dating a woman who used to be a man who has decided that she is a lesbian. It boggles the mind, my mind at least. It was nice to see a softer side of Normal and to see JC McKenzie stretching his acting muscles. I'm beginning to think Normal isn't so bad after all, just misunderstood. Whatever the case, I did feel bad for him in the end. He's lonely. We also learned that Normal was quite the academic before the pulse. I was kind of surprised by that, I guess it never occurred to me that these people must have had a completely different life per-pulse gone through 10 years ago. To go from a super power to a third world country overnight, I can't even imagine what that would be like. Now on a lighter note, what the hell is Sketchy going to do with Lousie's phone number? Okay, never mind, I probably don't want to know. Some great things about this episode was Max cooking, or should I say, Max claiming to cook when all she can do is boil water, as well as her expression after landing in the mud. After that I don't blame Max for ditching Logan. I would have done the same. Max's ranting over the defects in men was pretty hilarious, I particularly like the phrase 'another man on a mission'. And what is with Kendra's Rolodex, does she really know that many men? The Mack 10 cameo was okay, I guess I was hoping for more. It's not that hard to play a gang banger who shoots everyone. Seems like they could have used him for something more interesting. Well, in the end, Max saved Logan, Detective Sung, and the girls who were being shipped out of the country all by making it up as she went along. Overall I liked this episode, definitely in my top ten, of course that's not too hard at this point. The romance was great right, just subtle enough to keep us interested and wanting more, and we are slowly getting to know the supporting characters. Next week will be pretty rough for our heroine. Looks like she might be meeting her match. See you then.
