Episode Review - 411 on the DL.
411 On the DL was penned by Doris Egan and in this episode we finally got to meet Zack, one of Max's 'family', we learned a little more about Logan and his life, and we also FINALLY got to see more of Herbal Thought. I was beginning to wonder why they had him as a series regular. Well, actually, I'm still wondering why he is a series regular, but hopefully he will be utilized more now that 'Dark Angel' has a full 22 episodes to play with. So who else knew right away that Sam was Zack? It was pretty obvious, even without the promo saying we were going to meet one of Max's 'family'. I loved the opening scene with Max racing her bike late at night. I'll admit I was surprised that the person she was racing was Zack, but I'm sure a few of you saw that coming. I guess 'Manticore' kids have a thing for motorcycles.

The three main storylines of this episode revolved around family and what we expect from family versus what we actually get. Max finally finds a member of her 'family' only the experience wasn't as joyous as she thought it would be. Logan reestablishes contact with his ex-wife, who is now sober, only to learn she was really interested in getting to know him again. She just wanted money. Then there's Herbal, he has to deal with his girlfriend's former boyfriend, Winston, who his girlfriend apparently still has feelings for. Herbal is the only one who really won in this episode. He got to kick the guy out in the end.

Max's reunion with Zack was not what she expected. She created a fantasy about a family that never existed. Her and the other kids were raised as soldiers not brothers and sisters. Max has been hunting her 'family' down with the hope of recreating something that was never there. Max was of course excited to see Zack and immediately hugged him, but Zack was obviously uncomfortable with the closeness. He didn't seem to know what to make of it. It was like he had never really experienced that before. In fact, he probably hadn't had much affection in his lifetime. As soon as Lydecker showed up, Zack was obviously more in his element. The fight where Zack and Max teamed up to take down the soldiers was great. They really worked well together, anticipating each other's moves. They fought together like old pros. I guess their childhood training really paid off.

After escaping Lydecker's clutches again, Max found out that Zack knew where Max has been all along. He had been keeping an eye on her along with the other Project Manticore kids. Max asked him about the others, but Zack refused to tell her where her brothers and sisters were. He was thinking like a soldier. He said if one was caught, all would be compromised. I suppose he's right, but it seems to me that they might actually be stronger together. Of course I'm not a soldier, but Zack is. Zack's training as a soldier is complete. He lives his life on the run, covertly protecting his platoon. He even ordered Max to leave Seattle, but she refused. Max has chosen a different path. She wants to separate herself from her childhood training. So she decides to stay in Seattle despite the fact that Lydecker is closing in on her. In Seattle, she has friends, a connection that makes her more than just a genetically engineered soldier and she's not ready to let that go. I don't think we've seen the last of Zack and I must say William Gregory Lee did a really good job portraying the cold soldier.

The third storyline had to do with Logan's ex-wife. The scheming ex-wife looking for cash has been overplayed a bit, but somehow it worked here with Blaine coming to Max to set her straight about Logan and his ex-wife. Logan knew what was happening, but he, like many including Max, wanted to believe in something that was never there.

The early discovery of Zack has me worried. I mean where do we go from here. Maybe find her Mom, I guess time will tell. The acting has only gotten better as far as I am concerned. The supporting characters are becoming more recognizable and I almost feel like I'm getting to know them. Jessica Alba and Michael Weatherly are both superb in their roles. Valarie Rae Miller has to have the best role on television right now. I mean who else gets to call everybody 'boo'.

One interesting tidbit we learned in this episode is that Max's motorcycle is an extension of her soul. We also learned Max has a knack for staring down guard dogs. And that the bar code on her neck is etched into genetic code which basically means she can never get rid of it.

Next week looks like it has potential. Max and Lydecker meet face to face. Lucky for Max the bar code is on the back of neck, not on her forehead. And it looks like we will finally be getting a run of new episodes without interruptions. New episodes until January folks. Catch ya next week.
