Episode Review - C.R.E.A.M.
C.R.E.A.M. was penned by David Zabel and it's probably my least favorite episode to date. There were definitely some highlights, but overall, I would just rate it as okay. At the end of the episode we found out C.R.E.A.M. stood for Cash Rules Everything Around Me. That was pretty much the theme for the episode.

The episode starts with the introduction of Alina, the daughter of a former crusading journalist, who was a colleague and mentor of Logan's. Alina wants to find her father, Nathan Herrero. Logan decides to help her. He decides to find out what happened to Alina's father and enlists Max's help. Max is willing to help not only because of the quid pro quo relationship she has with Logan, but also because Max relates to Alina on some level. Max wants closure. She wants to know what happened to Zack and the other Project Manticore kids. Max thinks Alina wants the same thing. In the end, it turned out that Alina wanted revenge and cash. She got her revenge, she killed her father, but Max was able to prevent her from getting the cash at least.

At the end of the episode, after Logan's mentor died, Logan received a package from his mentor with details about a corrupt official. Attached to the package is a video with a message that said, "The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil…is for the good man to do nothing." Logan lives by this motto. He has dedicated his life to triumphing over evil. In the final scene when the Streaming Freedom Video broadcasts, I could see in Logan's eyes how upset he was about losing his mentor and friend and I think, so could Max.

We did learn some interesting tidbits about Max in this episode. First, she has a fascination for red balloons; second, she has her cherry flavor lip balm with her even when she's commenting burglary; third, she doesn't know when her birthday is; and fourth, she doesn't use guns.

Max's fascination with red balloons comes from a childhood memory. During what looked like a training mission, Max and the other Project Manticore kids saw a red balloon in a tree. They stopped the training mission to go after it. They'd never seen one before. They were almost afraid to touch it because it was so unfamiliar to them. According to the supervising soldiers, the balloon was contraband. Can you imagine a balloon being referred to as contraband?

As for the lip balm, when Max was putting it on as she was flooding the bathroom in the police station I just had to laugh. I guess that proves that Max is like any other girl, only she can suspend from ceilings and jump cat-like around a room while teasing a security guard.

When Logan found out Max didn't have a birthday, his advice when he finds to Max for her to chose one, because "in this short brutal life you have to seize any opportunity you can to celebrate." I tend to agree with Logan on this. My life isn't that brutal and hopefully it won't be too short, but I do seize every opportunity I can to celebrate. Max, on the other hand, doesn't really seem to celebrate much. She's probably never had a birthday party.

The fact that Max doesn't use guns surprised me at first, but it makes since. She was raised to be a killing machine. She was taught to use all sorts of weapons, she was taught to kill, but she rejects this teaching. I've seen her cause death, but I've not seen her kill. Max just wants to get by in life and hopefully someday find her 'family'. She does use her abilities to help her friends. In fact, she is really giving, as proven by her helping out Sketchy.

The subplot with Sketchy had some of the episodes best moments. Sketchy is a 'young capitalist in a failing economy' and as such, he decided to pursue a career as a currier for the Russian Mafia. It doesn't sound like a very sound career move to me and Sketchy did get in a slightly comprising situation because of it, but somehow I doubt he has learned his lessen. I have a feeling Max will have to continue to bail Sketchy out of tight situations. The scene where Max and Original Cindy go to the Mafia's casino to win the cash Sketchy needs was classic. Max does a pretty good job of playing the ditz and Original Cindy was fabulous as usual. The scene when Max and Cindy were attacked outside the casino was classic, especially when Cindy thought she scared one of the creeps away when in actuality the creep saw that Max had single-handed taken care of two guys on her own. I am waiting for Cindy to figure out Max is more than just an ordinary chick.

Next week are the elections so no DARK ANGEL, but in two weeks it looks like we will finally meet one of Max's 'family'.
