This is what I would call a filler episode. "I And I Am A Camera" was written by David Simkins. All in all it was good episode, but it was a side step, not really meant to drive along the storyline. It was a breather for us in preparation for the final three episodes that I am sure will be absolutely amazing. There were of course some things revealed in this episode that will probably be of significance later, including Logan getting his hands on an exoskeleton and losing his income. The focus of the episode is a further example of the abuse of technology in post pulse America, particularly in the form of hover drones. We were introduced to hover drones in the first episode of the season. They are used as way to keep track of people in the larger cities, in areas cops are hesitant to patrol I assume. The drones have recording devices mounted on them and make me think of 'big brother' from George Orwell's book '1984'. It has been a long time since I read that book, but we have our own example of 'big brother' in the form of a reality TV series and yes, CBS is trying again. Do not ask me why! Anyway, a new feature has been added to the hover drones, not only can they search out and record crimes, now they search out particular people and kill them. Convenient tool, huh? Another thing we learned about hover drones earlier this season that comes into play now was that Logan's family played a big part in their creation, and is actually where Logan's funds come from. Well this little tidbit leads to Logan's financial downfall. There was no doubt in my mind that he would expose Cale Industries in the end. He's too honorable of a guy to let them get away with it. It remains to be seen how much this will affect him personally. He doesn't have the income he used to, but he does have his own personal cat burglar. Which we all know he probably won't use. We are introduced to an interesting character in this episode, Phil. Did he have a super hero name? If so, I must have missed it. Well, Phil was a bit eccentric to say the least. He was under the misguided notion that he was following his destiny. It was destiny when he found the exoskeleton in a warehouse, and exoskeleton that allows him to leap tall fences in a single bound. So now he roams the streets of Seattle yelling at people who litter and helping out with other stuff when he can. He's harboring some guilt over not being able to save his sister when he was younger. Isn't that how most super hero's start? Peter Parker couldn't save his Uncle Ben in the cartoon, Clark Kent was unable to save his father's life in the movie, and Bruce Wayne couldn't save his parent's lives. Loosing someone they love is how all the great ones began. Logan's Uncle Jonas, played by Lawrence Pressman, returned in this episode, only to be murdered in the end. He dabbled in something he should have never gotten into. He had me fooled when Logan went to see him, I mean, why would a successful businessman go so far. He had everything he needed and then some, why take the risk? Some people just don't know when to quit I suppose. At least it wasn't his intention to kill Logan. He was fooling himself however, when he thought it a good idea to pursue this hover drone technology. I am sad to see him go. I would have liked to see the dynamic between Logan and his family a little more, maybe next season. So before I wrap this up, I'll touch on another aspect of this episode, Logan taking Lydecker's words regarding Max to heart last episode. He kept a hold of the pictures Lydecker sent him and began treating Max differently. In the end he realized that there was more to Max than who she was made to be, but I was disappointed that he gave what Lydecker said any thought. Logan has known Max for almost a year. He has seen her happy, sad, seen the compassion she has for her family and friends. She isn't the girl next door; she can't be, not with people after her, ready to put her in a cage or worse. Logan had no reason to doubt her! At the end of the episode we see Madame X again and she has a hold of the killer hover drone, that may come back to haunt Max and Logan. Well next week, we have the return of some of the X-5's, and only 3 more weeks to the season finale. Wow, this year has gone by fast! I am so excited we are getting another season of DARK ANGEL too!
