'Haven' written by Jose Molina is a journey in discovery for our heroes as they explore sins of the past. Logan deceives Max so he can go to Cape Haven to find a man and right a wrong that happened over 10 years ago. When he finds this man, Rollins, we see and learn that Rollins, along with many others, were caught up in a bad situation and these people reacted to that situation and not necessarily in the best way. It's hard to place blame, when something is done in the heat of the moment and when the situation was beyond anyone's control. While in Cape Haven, however, Logan and Max stumble upon a wrong that can be righted. Can you imagine what it would have been like to all of a sudden be without power? Okay, my lights have gone off before, and it is annoying, but these people were disconnected from everything. No one had power. Cell phones were useless. Battery operated radios were at first useless too. There was no way to find out what was happening. We've seen riots start in the major US cities as a result of a shooting or other event. Recently there was one in Cincinnati, because a white cop shot an unarmed black man. I don't know the details, I was just visiting my folks and saw a little bit on the news, and Cincinnati had to establish an 8pm curfew to try to control the riots. These things happen, not often here in the US, but they do happen. The mob mentality that carries a tense situation into a riot is disturbing. Can you imagine if that was happening all over the US at the same time and not just in cities? Things got out of hand, people did things they would never do in normal situations. The authorities had to regain control. Can these people be held responsible for those actions? Sometimes they can. The men in Cape Haven who killed that poor family because they had electricity when no one else did, deserved to be punished. But in the case of Rollins, it's not as clear to me. There's no doubt he regrets what happened and he knows what he did was wrong. But at that time it was kill or be killed. Riots plagued the city. Chaos reigned. The police did what they had to do to get things under control. Using the extreme measures was the only way for them to do that. It's easy for Logan to look back and say that what they did wrong, but he wasn't in the situation with Rollins and the others. He was up in his penthouse or at his Uncle's cabin, riding out the chaos in comfort. I don't like to think about what it would have been like at that time, but what happened then, explains the corruption and the hardness of Max's world. Another aspect of 'Haven' was the reversal of roles for Max and Logan at the end. Max was incapacitated with seizures, and it was up to Logan to save the day. Logan's a smart guy and despite his handicap, he was able to take on those four men well. It was the first time Logan had ever killed a man however. I have to wonder if that will affect him later on. I do think he finally understands Rollins better and what he and others less privileged must have gone through after the pulse. And maybe Logan is starting to see that his world is not as black and white as he once thought. Sometimes it is kill or be killed. Digging past crimes isn't always going to help Logan improve the world around him. In Cape Haven, it helped Sage discover who he was and who is family was, but in the case of Rollins, what would have Logan accomplished if he brought Rollins and the other offenders to trial. They did what they thought they had to do. I doubt anyone gave an order to kill unarmed civilians. It just happened. A few things I liked about this episode include Logan's jealousy at the pool hall, Max's bonding with Sage was cute, and the opening with Max and Sketchy. Nice way to get a pair of shoes!! Logan confronting Max about how sometimes she needs rely on others was also rather poignant. She has her own weakness and while I continually get mad at Logan for not asking for help from Max, I realize in this episode that Max is guilty of the same thing sometimes. She likes standing on her own just like everyone else and asking for help can be very hard for independent people like Max and Logan. She's the one who was trained to be a soldier, but when those men attacked, she couldn't do anything she was helpless. She had to rely on Logan and Sage completely. Well, in the end, everything ended up okay and Max and Logan headed back to Seattle in one piece, but it turned out not to be much of a vacation. They'll need to take a vacation to recover from that vacation!! Next new episode is 'Shorties in Love', we finally learn a little about Original Cindy's past.
