So Logan is still being stubborn and shutting Max out. Is anyone here surprised? I know I'm not. Men! Anyway, "Female Trouble" was penned by Patrick Harbinson and was yet another amazing episode. At the start of the episode we learn that Logan is seeing a back alley doctor, played by Brenda Bakke, regarding the trouble he has been having with his legs. For some reason he had to sell a painting to get cash to pay the doctor that seemed odd to me. Normally, Logan has limitless funds, why would he need to sell a painting? It may mean nothing, but Max mentioning the painting does hint that maybe Logan's funds aren't limitless? Maybe I'm reading too much into it. So the story progresses and we learn that the doctor Logan has hired just happens to be one of the doctor's who experimented on kids at Manticore. Isn't that convenient? It seems that Logan happened upon Dr. Adriana Vertes while he was searching for information for Max on the Manticore kids. It is logical that if anyone could help him, it would be someone from Manticore. I feel kind of bad for Logan. The guy regained control of his legs, only to have them taken away again. I guess I can understand why he is hiding it from Max at this point. It's just frustrating to watch! Well, Max , being Max and no liking the fact that Logan is keeping things from her and being cold toward, proceeds to follow him to one of his appointments. She then does a little reconnaissance and breaks into the office to see what the dealio is. While there, she is confronted with her past in two forms. First Max ends up protecting the Doctor from an X-5, Jace, one of the X-5's that were left behind when her, Zack, and the others ran away. I've been wondering about the other kids since the beginning of the season. I figured sooner or later Lydecker would send one of the Manticore kids after Max. It makes since that they would have a better chance of finding and capturing Max. Now I can see why he may have been hesitant to do that. Even though these kids have been programmed to be soldiers, they are still kids who share a history with Max and the others. That history probably makes Lydecker uncertain how they would respond to meeting someone like themselves who has grown up on the outside. So Max's run in with an X-5 reveals that Logan's doctor is another person from Max's past. Adriana Vertes worked at Manticore while Max was there. We learn from her that she worked at Manticore from the X-3 series through the X-7 series until she decided she couldn't take it anymore. Now the good doctor is on the run, because Manticore has decided that it's doctors and their knowledge cannot be allowed to even exist outside Manticore. When Max confronts Logan with what she has learned, he is immediately defensive and upset that she followed him. He even accused her of it being easier for her if he remained in the wheel chair, which is absolutely absurd! Here, we really begin to see how desperate Logan has been feeling since he found out he may be losing the use of his legs again. And how terrified he is of spending the rest of his life in that chair. Max of course agrees to help him get his treatment from the doctor and sets up a trap for Jace. When Jace and Max face off, Jace suddenly collapses and we learn that she is pregnant. That was quite a surprise to me, what a twist. Well, Max reaches out to Jace and despite Jace's brainwashing, she sees that Max is an ally. I think the motherly instinct took a hold of Jace. In order to protect her baby, she had to get away from Manticore, and Max was the only the way to do that. Too bad the good doctor had another agenda. Why she thought she could trust Lydecker is beyond me? It seems they had a past, but she had to know that Lydecker couldn't be trusted, even if she were able to bring in both Max and Jace, there is no way Lydecker would let her live. She was delusional to think otherwise. Well, with Lydecker around, Jace had to make a choice about her child quickly. At first I wasn't sure what she would do. She was, after all, practically brainwashed by Manticore to be the supreme soldier. Of course the fact that she was involved with someone on the base in a romantic way implies her brainwashing was not as complete as Lydecker would have desired. Well, Jace choose to run and not provide Lydecker with a 'unique research opportunity.' Max of course helped her and sent her to Mexico where she could have her baby in peace. At the end of the episode, Logan had to face that the doctor he was relying on to help him walk again was dead. His inner turmoil really came out in this episode when we see him really consider killing himself, rather than face a life in a wheelchair. After Max found out how distraught he was from Dr. Vertes' notes, she rushed back to Logan. Meanwhile, Logan realized, with the help of an elderly neighbor, that life is precious and he does have a lot to live for even if he remains in the wheelchair. When Max found Logan alive, it was very touching. When she saw the gun, she must have known that suicide did cross his mind. Their relationship is interesting to watch. I'm curious if it really can go to another level, however. They are very different and she is young, while he has a lot of experience. It will be interesting to watch at least!!
