Episode Review - Art Attack.

Maybe this episode should have been named 'The Adventures of a $6,000 Dress'. That's all I could think about as I watched Max run around town trying to save her boss, a stolen painting, a distraught architect, and Logan from making a fool of himself at his cousin's wedding.

This week's episode was written by Doris Egan and was a nice start to February sweeps. I consider this episode to be a side step of sorts after learning of the Red Series. It gave us a chance to see our favorite characters have fun and live their lives, of course their lives are a little more complicated than most peoples, but at least Max wasn't in immediate danger of being captured or killed. Normal was the only one in real danger. He was in danger of discovering, well actually experiencing, the true meaning of 'defenestration'. Luckily Max and Original Cindy came to his rescue despite their dislike for the man. After this, maybe we won't hear Normal saying 'bip bip bip' anymore. I can dream, can it? I will say that J.C. MacKenzie does a great job portraying Normal and it is a pleasure to watch him. Valarie Rae Miller continues to shine as Original Cindy as well. It looks like Original Cindy might have gotten someone to be her boo this week in Logan's Ex.

Another reason I like episodes like these is because we learn things about the character's past in the slow pace episodes. For instance, we learned a little bit about Logan's family. The fact that his uncle is part of the 'system' Logan is fighting against was a nice and somewhat expected touch. We also get to see Max go to her first wedding. In general I'm not a big fan of voiceovers, but her commentary during the ceremony was rather amusing. We see her cynical side break down for a bit as she watches two people who obviously love each other get married. It was also a nice touch to have Max cry and for Logan to see it. Max rarely shows her feminine side, but we all know it's there. Just because she can kick some ass doesn't mean she's not a woman.

My favorite part of this episode though was watching Max as she took down several men in formal wear. I loved it when she tripped on her dress and fell as she was trying to take out one of the Korean's. It was amazing she didn't break her neck fighting in that dress. Of course, she is a genetically engineered super human so if she did break her neck, it would probably heal. Max's skulking around in that dress looked a little ridiculous. I guess I don't notice it as much when she's wearing her cat burglar outfit, but in that dress I can tell Jessica Alba knows nothing about being sneaky.

As a guest star in this episode we had Master P as Duvalier. He was pretty good I must admit. This use of a hip-hop great was much better than the last such appearance on Dark Angel. I won't bore you with those details.

I like the little details that the writers include in the stories that remind us that the US that Max and Logan live in is absolutely nothing like the US we live in. For instance, the preacher said 'by the power invested to me by the military command of the state of Washington'. Last time I checked we had no military states in the US. Makes me wonder who is in charge in post-pulse America. Is there an elected President with Martial Law or is it a Military Dictatorship of sorts. It was also a nice touch to address the loss of America culture as a result of the pulse. I can't imagine the Baseball Hall of Fame or the Statue of Liberty being taken out of the US, but I guess it's possible that the government sold them. In our world we've seen countless art treasures taken for Russia, Asia, and Africa and taken to other parts of the world. Sometimes those treasures have been bought, sometimes they've been stolen.

I was surprised at first to see Logan shoot the guy at the end to frame Duvalier for murder, but after thinking about it for a bit, I realized that things we would consider harsh and cold in our time would be necessary in the world that Max and Logan live in. Logan probably doesn't like creating new evidence to bring about justice, but he just feels the end justifies the means.

The end of the episode shows Logan getting feeling in his legs for the first time. I did not expect this to happen so soon, but will Logan be walking again and how did this come about. Oh well, only time will tell.
