John Savage was born in Old Bethpage, Long Island, New York. He studied acting at the prestigious American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City;
his breakthrough role in film came five years after his debut, in 1978's The Deer Hunter. A clean-cut, boyishly handsome blond, Savage impressed in such other acclaimed films as Hair,
The Onion Field, and Inside Moves.
In 1988, Savage left Hollywood and moved to South Africa, where he became
involved with the anti-apartheid movement, worked with Nelson Mandela, and shot
footage for television news stations. In 1992, he worked on Spike Lee's “Malcolm
X" as the Production Manager in South Africa, before moving back to the US in
1994.

His recent film credits include "Message in a Bottle," Spike Lee's "Summer of
Sam," "The Thin Red Line," "White Squall" and "The Crossing Guard."
Savage's television credits include starring roles in the TV movies "The
Virginians," "The Jack Bull," Oprah Winfrey's "Before Women Had Wings" and Tom
Clancy's "Op Center," as well as appearances in episodes of "The X-Files," "Star
Trek: Voyager," "The Outer Limits," "Walker Texas Ranger" and "Tales From the
Crypt."
