The return of SCARFACE (the next generation)DARK ANGEL co-creator says yes to crack

Well, since it's been two decades since the last reinvention of SCARFACE (remember Tony Montana and his "little friend"?), the good folks at USA Network are dusting off the property and giving it a new coat of paint for the new century. New criminals, new SCARFACE!

USA's SCARFACE will feature a motley crew of Los Angeles drug kingpins and will be set during the 1980s and the rise of crack. DARK ANGEL co-creator Charles Eglee will write the four-hour mini-series and also executive produce the project. Instead of picking up the threads left from Brian De Palma's 1983 movie (which had its Scarface and his posse members of Miami's Cuban populace), Eglee is choosing to re-think the concept and make his characters black.

USA would like to have the new SCARFACE ready for broadcast for next year. Casting will be underway shortly.

SCARFACE (USA) - Charles Eglee ("Dark Angel," "The Shield") has climbed aboard to write and executive produce the four-hour mini-series, an updated version of the "Scarface" story that restages the gangster classic with a black cast in inner-city Los Angeles during the crack epidemic of the 1980s. The cable channel is targeting the project for a fall 2004 or early 2005 debut. No director or cast have been named. USA's development of "Scarface" marks the third filmed adaptation of the Armitage Trail novel, the first being in 1932 starring Paul Muni and the second in 1983 starring Al Pacino. Rap-music producer Defari is also on board to develop a soundtrack and serve as a technical adviser on the mini-series.
